Establishing Clarity in the Mind

In order to maximize the quality of our encounter with the world, clarity in our mind is a virtue. In tutoring sessions, Robert contributes to the capacity of the student to approach this clarity.

Participating in a Connection with the Subject Material

In the space of our mind, with the attributes of harmony and clarity, knowledge of the subject matter is to be maximized, according to our abilities. Knowledge includes both the deeper essences of the material and the finer details that yield a holistic understanding.

Communicating Our Perceptions of Truth

The insights, perceptions, and knowledge we have gained about the subject matter through our studies, meditations, and contemplations are then to be communicated naturally. This act of communication is an act of giving to the larger community. Writing is thus an interconnected giving among individuals in a community, a communication of unique insights, where each perspective contributes something valuable. In this way, writing and reading signify the giving and receiving of knowledge among individuals in a community.

Robert offers patient, calm, and adaptive tutoring.

Each student arrives at the tutoring space with a unique set of qualities, interests, and starting points. These unique attributes of the student are to be factored into a determination about how the tutoring space is to be configured and customized to naturally promote the success and flourishing of the student.

Activities during tutoring sessions may include verbal composition practice, written composition practice, vocabulary study and implementation, critical thinking practice, critical reading practice, and review and examination of previous student compositions assigned as work to be completed before the session.

One method to better understand a text is to observe the way in which the complexity of the text traces to a certain number of simple, component elements. By better understanding the process of how the complex traces to the simple, and how the simple traces to the complex, a more independent comprehension of the material can arise. In the process of writing, this principle may be actualized by setting down a number of bullet points containing ideas in their simplest possible expression, in order to identify the core essence of the substance that one wishes to write about before one engages with the task of creating a composition. In this way, the vital connection with the core ideas is not lost in the course of the writing process.

The deepest insight, or insights, of a writing composition can be termed ‘the thesis.’

The term ‘thesis’ is an ancient Greek word signifying a ‘setting down’ of something. In this way, the thesis indicates that the writer sets down a particular insight. We may understand a thesis to signify, in one sense, the deepest insight present in a writing composition.

The nature of communication is dynamic. Thus, in excellent writing, the thesis may sometimes be distilled across a multiplicity of ideas or paragraphs. In other compositions, a thesis may present itself in the form of a single idea or statement. Because the thesis signifies a moment of depth in the process of understanding a subject material, the discovery of this one insight, or group of insights, naturally occurs at the end of a protracted process of study, thinking, and contemplation.

Students may feel confusion around the topic of a thesis due to the misplaced expectation that the thesis is ordinarily known at the beginning of the writing process. To the contrary, a thesis that contributes to community knowledge is ordinarily discovered at the end of a long process, or perhaps never at all. To reach a definitive insight about a subject matter is a rare event, and acknowledging this promotes the natural flow of the writing process. Simply making progress in establishing clarity about the subject is itself a great achievement.

Clarifying Definitions

Much confusion and misunderstanding can be reduced if the definitions of important terms in the essay or writing composition are clearly determined and specified. The definition of a thing signifies its essential nature, and understanding the nature of a thing is a fundamental act of knowledge. The question ‘what’ underlies the other interrogative actions of ‘who,’ ‘where,’ ‘when,’ ‘how,’ and ‘why.’ This is because the question ‘what’ is also implicit in any of those other modes of interrogation.

Understanding the Underlying Premises

Genuine understanding involves knowing the underlying premises of a particular proposition or statement. This is similar to the framework of causes and effects. An effect is not fully understood unless its causes are also understood. Similarly, excellent writing implies that the writer comprehends the original starting points of the ideas. This understanding is implied in the question, “To what do these ideas trace?”

Writing as Human Growth

As writing not only involves (1) a deeper entrance into the field of reality by which knowledge arises, but also (2) a deeper participation in, and service to, the community to which the writing is shared, the act of authentic writing is associated with deep human growth and joy.

Writing in an Age of AI

In an age of AI, the strength and independence of human thought, consciousness, and intuition should not only be maintained, but strengthened. An act of natural, organic intelligence is also an act of life. At Claystone Studies Writing Academy, the approach is to promote the independent flourishing of our natural intuition, intelligence, and critical thinking abilities, so that we are never dependent on AI in order to have a deep and fruitful understanding of the world. Excellent writing emerges from the deepest core of our own, organic being. The communication of these heartbeats of life contributes to the vitality of our wider human communities.
